RESTORATION CONTRACTING

For your pre-1940 building, a full scope of construction services is available, assuring your project is built with historic authenticity and up to date techniques.  From the beginning of your project, we select and build a team of skilled artisans specialized in a variety of building trades from slate roofing and cobblestone masonry, to ornamental plastering and decorative painting.  It is easily within our scope of expertise to advise a building owner on the correct method of glazing and painting a 12 over 8 sash in a 1793 Federal home, establish a long range Master Plan for an 1838 Greek Revival church, or design, execute, and supervise the restoration and construction of a late 19th century Gothic Revival dairy barn.  The years of working on historic structures with their owners has continued to increase my enthusiasm for the preservation of our architectural heritage.  Rescuing old buildings has become my passion.

We work throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states and specialize in pre-1940 historic architecture and old building technology.  Close working relationships are formed with our clients, many of whom have worked with us repeatedly, to produce high quality results that meet their needs while dealing with their buildings as gently as possible.  A unique combination of services is available to individuals seeking the finest in historic architectural preservation and restoration, and we look forward to working with you in the future.

OUR SPECIALITIES

BARNS

We successfully assist owners of historic barns refit their building(s for continued use in agriculture, often at great savings over the cost of new buildings. We encourage the preservation of historic barns, provide maintenance and restoration services, and encourage sensitive rehabilitation for new uses when their historic use is no longer feasible.

COMMERCIAL

The sensitive combination of a for-profit, functional business entity and the design aesthetics of an historic building is occasionally a challenging task, but one that we have successfully fulfilled for many clients.

Whether a garment manufacturing facility needing to maintain its original 1880’s windows in a National Register District, or an 1860’s industrial plumbing supply distributor converting their structure to modern day condominiums, we can efficiently restore original building elements to function in a 21st Century business climate.

MUSEUMS

Often called upon to work with private, public, nonprofit, and governmental organizations to help stabilize and protect their buildings and grounds, we’re accustomed to working with groups and committees to achieve the best possible results for the place and the people.

Whether a small, local house museum, or a National Register landmark, our services help to minimize deterioration, respect the owners’ finances, and plan for future care and maintenance.

RESIDENTIAL

Combining yesterday’s construction and today’s lifestyle can often be a challenge to the inexperienced, but it’s always a welcome opportunity that we readily accept. Respecting the integrity of the original structure and materials, while adapting your home to function for a 21st Century lifestyle is one of our greatest pleasures, especially when the owners (stewards) of this property realize that their dream can become a reality!

RELIGIOUS

Many massive, ornate city cathedrals, neighborhood churches, and even the quaint village chapels are facing shrinking attendance and occasionally insurmountable maintenance challenges.

From long neglected, poorly maintained masonry to misinformed stained glass window repairs, old and historic places of worship still need informed owners willing to partner with knowledgeable craftsmen and design professionals to insure a successful future for these buildings so important to us all.
